Star Trek: Online

I spent about a week in the ST:O beta. I play 2 characters. One was an Engineering Ensign and one a Tactical Ensign. I have to say that I didn't crack level 10 with either due in some part to my own time constraints but also due in a larger part to the constant down-time that I experienced this weekend with the ST:O servers. Difficult to play an MMO if the server that hosts it isn't up and running, ya dig? But, all that aside, here are my observations...

The interface is pretty slick. It's reminiscent of Star Trek, without actually being Star Trek. I guess the LCARS interface was just too difficult to put into an MMO... That's a ding purely from a Trekkie standpoint. And lets face it, you can bet your plasma manifolds that I am a Trekkie. And and engineering trek nerd to boot. So that little omission is somewhat saddening. Other than that, the interface is standard MMO fare, especially if you're familiar with Champions Online.

The character creator is an excellent system. Again, the interface is still pretty standard. It's serviceable. The options, like in Cryptic's other major MMO offering, allow you to put together a standard character quickly or to put together a completely original character with a little effort. There have been a few rumblings about missing parts from this {obscure Trek alien reference} or that {obscure Trek alien reference}. While, again as a Trekkie, I can recognize these missing parts, I don't fault them for that one. If you give everyone everything right up front, where do you go from there? What do you offer at a later time to new subscribers or to as part of expansions? I personally think that the character creator as is, is an excellent one. Do your worst, I say.

Getting into the game was pretty easy and like most MMO's, the game leads you around by the nose until you have a basic grasp of the games workings. After the initial missions you're dropped in a Starbase, a city-like hub with shops, quests, and the like. The circular layout can be a little annoying at first, but you'll figure it out quickly enough. Go requisition your bridge crew and modify your ship to your liking. When you start, there are three ship hulls. You can mix and match any of four components to create your own ship. The components, Saucer, Strut, Nacelles, and Pylons, are easy enough to swap out. But you can only mix and match components from your current class. You can then apply a base coat, titled Material, and then an overcoat for the paint job. These can be applied to the individual components. There are currently about 10-12 options on this part. The colors, however, are so muted, that it's hard to see any real difference in most of them. Forget that old Romulan Bird of Pray (see below) from the original series with the bird wings painted on the bottom. Nothing is that bright or even defined.

Once you're out in the world, you'll find that the Sector map really sucks. I mean sucks like that thing at the bottom of the pool that sucks people down and kills them. Yeah, it's that bad. MMO's work best when you can immerse yourself in them. In this case, you lose the sense of these big, super-fast spaceships because you're forced to piddle around between systems in this slow, plodding manner. And it doesn't look like space... You don't get the feeling of being in a huge universe because you're not. It's an MMO, I get that. Each sector is like a continent in WoW or a Zone in CO. You get quests of different levels, but for the most part, the sector is based on your current level. I can get that. That's part of the MMO business. However, the big blue streaks that layout paths from one system to another? Come on, I've seen ever single episode of every series. I've never seen anything like that except when they've show close ups of where they plotted out a course to a given system/planet. And then it goes away. What possible reason would we have for something like this?

The next thing is that upon reaching a system, you enter an instance. The game automatically groups you if you have the appropriate quest and there are others entering the same instance. This can be helpful and it's something that I actually liked. From this point, the actual game, the game mechanics take over and the game shows it's true colors, for better or worse. If you played the tactical battles in Pirates of the Burning sea, then you've played this before. The addition of the Z axis doesn't have a lot of effect other than when firing weapons with a 45 degree cone, such as disruptor cannons or photon torpedoes. In this case, the nose of your ship has to pointing toward the enemy, above or below you. Still, there are only four shields, not the expected six (fore, aft, starboard, port, dorsal and ventral). Add in the fact that you can't go completely vertical and you've got a four-sided target. This, after the initial disappointment, isn't a huge problem. I still found the ship combat to be fun, especially when in the middle of a giant scrum with three other captains against a dozen enemies.

Planet-side missions I found to be fun as well. Once I got past the initial problems with my bridge officers not showing up for away missions, making them nigh impossible to complete, away team missions were quite fun. They were not all that memorable but as I said, I enjoyed them as a break from ship-board combat.

Micromanagement... Not my favorite thing, to be sure. But for some reason, I enjoyed the MM-style mini-game that Bridge Officers present you with. You can constantly upgrade them, train them, and improve them. The other thing that I loved was the ability to rename them. Yeah, I had a bridge crew that consisted of the wife as a vulcan, and my dogs as bolians, bajorans, and some unknown species. That was a great thing for me.

All in all, the game is shaping up to be pretty cool. Will it be cool over the long term? That I'm not so sure about. I will probably buy the game once it's out, but it remains to be seen whether it can hold my attention once the Trekkie in my logs off. Then we'll see how much I enjoy the game or if it was just the Trekkie in me getting a quick chance to sit in the center seat...

So far... 6/10

The Weekend...

Wow... It was a busy weekend... Where to start? Guess we'll go with Friday... since it was, ya know, the start of the weekend and all...

Spent some one-on-one time with Star Trek: Online. After the big patch, I have to say that things got a ton better... when I was actually able to get on and stay on. There were a ton of "Emergency Maintenance" events this weekend. I'd say its great to get it out of the way before they go live... I just hope that's what this is. Unlike everyone else, I don't have an irrational hatred for Cryptic. For me, the Champions Online launch went without a hitch. I understand that a lot of people had issues; I didn't. But like I said... for me the game was fine.

Saturday was more of the same. I spent the majority of the day just relaxing with Tiffany and the dogs, playing ST:O. Tiff and I had a pretty good day, for the most part... The dogs are driving us insane, but that's a whole other story... Saturday night was fun... One of my best buds came back into town for the weekend. Met up at The Pub up at Polaris for some beers. At least that was the plan. After being diagnosed with a 3 hour wait, we decided to take our business elsewhere... We wound up at Hooters over on Sancus. Mike, William (the Red), Rory, Joe, and the Mironiks all sat down and enjoyed some food, conversation, and a beer or two. It was a good time and the Red and I agreed to find time to hang out some time. Dude's friggin' hilarious. At the end of the night, all agreed it was a good night and we left without a hitch.

Sunday was laundry day and you know how that goes so I'm not going to get into it. Spent a little more time with ST:O. I'll post my mini-review of that here in just a bit. Sat down and re-watched Tropic Thunder and Minority Report this weekend. Both are good movies. Despite Tom Cruise... Although I have to say, Cruise's character in TT is one of the funniest I've ever seen him do. It was a credit to the fact that, when the situation calls for it, Cruise can be a great actor.

Last thing I want to address is the NFL. For me, the Colts making the Superbowl was a foregone conclusion. I was excited to see my point of view vindicated. Still not happy about not being 18-0 right now, but that's another story. The game this weekend that held the most excitement was the one that was the most exciting. Purple and Gold versus the Black and Gold. Vikes and Saints. On one hand, I love New Orleans. I'm going to be moving there this summer. Louisiana and all it's great food, people, and history are all the things I want to be around. On the other hand, even with all the shit, I love Brett Favre. I want to see the guy succeed. By kickoff, I'd made my decision as to who I was going to root for; The Saints. The Crescent City has earned my support. So I threw it behind them 100%.

In the end, after behind tied 14-14 at halftime and 28-28 at the end of regulation, the Saints marched down field after a Brett Favre interception and kicked a 40yd field goal to win the game, 31-28. As soon as the ball left the ground, the crowd was up, roaring. It was obvious, after the ball cleared the flagging hands of a Viking defender, that it had both the distance and accuracy; he could have kicked that ball from the 50yd line and still had enough to put it through. And dead down the middle. Clutch if there ever was. Afterwards, on Bourbon St, the good times did indeed roll... So in 2 weeks, on February 7, the 2 best teams in the NFL's regular season square off for what should be the best Superbowl in years. The Colts striding in like they deserve it and the Saints streaking in like they own it. Got to be a better game than the last time the Colts were here, right?

MMORPG's

So I started playing Fallen Earth recently. I really like it alot. The funny thing is that when I started, way back in the beta, I didn't. It was shoddy, not very pretty, and way to different to enjoy. Turns out, I just wasn't ready for this complex a game.

I've since come around. In the interim between closed beta (which I quit after a week) and where I'm at now, I picked up Champions Online. That game rocks. No question about it. I love the game. But I burnt myself out on it for a while so I took a break and checked out several other MMO's during that time. I came back to FE. I thought, nah, but I'll give it a shot. After the third day of the 15 day trial, I'd made my mind up; I was subscribing.

The gameplay had improved dramatically and so had it's stability. The idea beyond the skill and crafting systems finally grabbed me.

Damn it's been a long time...

Well, like the title says, it's been a long damn time since I posted to something like this. I've been down so many roads and made so many pit stops that I'm not sure I remember where I started or where I'm going.

For the new people, here's a quick synopsis:

My name is Chris Taylor. My friends call me Dozer. That's kind of morphed into Dozer the Dozarian or The Dozarian. Most of my online interactions are through the Dozer or Dozarian persona. I'm a fan of computer games in general and MMORPG's and FPS's specifically. I have a pseudo-wife, a daughter and a pseudo-daughter. We also have, I don't know, a bunch of dogs...

What's a bunch you ask? Here, I'll show you!
  1. Hugo Grissom Taylor (Pug)(2yo)
  2. Leia Taylor (Pug)(4yo)
  3. Connor Taylor (Pug)(1yo)
  4. Kayla Taylor (Pug)(4yo)
  5. Brutus Taylor (Pug)(5yo)
  6. Pablo "Hunchback" Taylor (Pug)(3yo)
  7. Riley "Wheels" Taylor (Pug)(1yo)
  8. Daisy May Taylor (St. Bernard)(1yo)
That's a bunch, yeah? I thought so, too. Family aside, my interests include a lot of stuff... I like sports. And not just to watch. I'm an avid volleyball player and I love paintball. I fully intend to get back into to active play this coming spring. I love softball as well, although it seems like its been forever since I played.

I play a lot of games. I love computer games the most right now. I'm currently playing Fallen Earth and considering going back to Champions Online. I'm really lookin' forward to Global Agenda as well... There are a few others on my radar right now, but we'll get into that in a later post...

So what's next... Oh yeah, more games. I like to play miniature games like Warhammer 40K and AT-43. Both are great games that require different things from the players. W40K requires a much larger investment of both cash and time to purchase and put together and paint the miniatures. AT-43 is all pre-painted and assembled and isn't as big a time or cash sink. Downside to it is that fewer players player AT-43 than W40K.

That's about it right now. I'm going to end this point in favor of a more pointed and specific post about specific things. Thanks for the read and everyone have a great day!

The Introduction...

First off, I suppose I should introduce myself...

My name is Chris but all of my buds call me Dozer. Long story short, my buddy Mike thought I needed a nickname when I started hangin' out with the Brew Crew. So, after much deliberation, he selected Dozer for several reasons.

Anyway, this blog is my blog away from blog. I post my blogs on Myspace more often than not. But sometimes I want them to have a much more broad range than I want to put on my personal account. So here we are. In my blogs, we'll cover everything from sports, gaming and such to politics and current news stories. I'll try to keep this at least a weekly blog if not more often. So, without further ado, let's get this thing started.

THE NBA DRAFT

Well, Thursday was the 2007 NBA Draft. This year, I didn't get to watch it and I actually had wanted to. I enjoy the draft shows for Basketball and Football. I don't care so much about Baseball and Hockey. Probably because these leagues have actual farm systems. You watch a guy for 2-4 years and then they will probably disappear for at least a year or two while they prepare for big league play. There are exceptions, but not many. The NBA and the NFL use college as it's farm system. Guys come straight out of college and, while they may not start, they are on the team. They travel with them, they compete for first string jobs right out of the gate. So it's more exciting to see who gets what because it has a much bigger chance of impacting the playing field in the upcoming season.

The drama in '07 is whether Greg Oden, the big softie from Ohio State, or Kevin Durant, the slick swingman from Texas, would be chosen number one overall by Portland. The days leading up to the draft seemed to answer that this year and, as the rumors had suggested, Oden was taken first. Seattle selected Durant with the two pick. Seattle, it should be noted, in no way got slighted by not getting Oden. In fact, Durant may be a bigger pick in the long run. It's certainly more likely that Oden will find the center spot in the NBA while Durant, only a scant two inches shorter, may end up at forward. It is this that may give Durant the edge over Oden. The forward position can range a bit more than the center and should give Durant more opportunity to use his explosiveness more than Oden can muscle people near the rim.

Right now, Oden reminds me of a young Dikembe Mutumbo. As a starter, Oden is going to bring in 15-18 points a game this year. But where his presence will really be found is on the other end of the floor, much like Mutumbo. Oden isn't going to get the easy, back to the basket stuff he got at Ohio State where he stronger and bigger than most of his opponents. In the NBA, every team has a seven footer just waitin' to lay a hard foul on ya. Where Oden will live or die is his aggression. If he develops that killer instinct, his PPG will rise from 15-18 to 25-27. He has that much potential. But he can't stand around and wait for his teammates to pick it up like he did at OSU. He has to be aggressive and go to the hole. He has to get up in the face of the defender and put one over him.

Durant, on the other hand, is much more likely to contribute on the offensive end more quickly. I'd almost expect 20 points per from this kid right out of the gate. Now where Oden is a better defensive player, Durant is a scorer. This may hurt him long term. Even Michael Jordan learned to play defense by the end of his career. This has proved difficult for some NBA stars as the glamour goes to the guys with the gaudy PPG. Look at Allen Iverson. The guy is one of the most prolific scorers ever. Has he ever sniffed the Finals? Sure once. "The Answer" averaged 32.9 PPG during the 00-01 playoffs. His career playoff high. They lost to the Lakers in 5.

So who was the better pick? Does it matter? Absolutely it matters. But the answer is that time will tell who won and who lost. The trades made by the teams before the draft all have the same problems that you suffer every time a player makes a move; will they continue to perform? The answer here is only going to be known in the future. Personally, my money is on Oden. But he needs to buck up and be the man, otherwise, he's just going to be another smooth center who doesn't get it done. Just like Zdrunas or Vlade.
